Dick is the instructor of the Investments module.
Below is additional information about Dick that may be important to you.
What is his day job?
In 1996, Dick and his wife Jill (also a CFP® certificant), co-founded Antares Capital Management, a fee-only wealth management firm that merged with Summit Wealth Management in July, 2008. Summit was recognized as one of the Top 100 independent wealth advisors by Barron’s in 2008. Dick remains a consultant to Summit.
What makes his background unique?
Dick began his career in financial services as a strategy consultant with Booz, Allen & Hamilton, after completing his MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago’s Business School.
He began teaching at Northwestern in 2004, and was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award for 2004-2005 by the School of Continuing Studies. Given the increasingly analytical nature of financial planning and investment management, Dick has found that both his MBA and his BA in Economics from Brown University have provided a strong framework for teaching.
What would he like to share with students?
“What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?” Dick and Jill gave this rhetorical question, in the form of a pewter paperweight, to every client and employee of their firm. It is a perspective that guides their personal and professional lives, and it may be a perspective as well for students contemplating a career change or a path to achieving the next level in their profession.
What are his outside interests?
Dick and Jill enjoy hiking, kayaking, gardening, travel and rescuing Great Pyrenees sheepdogs. Floyd is now their third Great Pyrenees, assuring that neither Dick nor Jill sleep beyond 6 AM.
Given his analytical background, Dick is also a volunteer with Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, where he records college textbooks in the fields of economics, finance and statistics.
