What is his day job?
Richard is a full time practicing trusts & estates attorney. He is the lead attorney in the estate planning and administration department of Preti, Flaherty, Beliveau & Pachios, LLP, a Portland, ME law firm which also has offices in Augusta, ME, Concord, NH, Boston, MA and Washington DC. Richard is admitted to practice law in five jurisdictions and is also a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) (licensed in Georgia) and a Certified Financial Planner Certificant (CFP ®) certificant.
Richard has been a practicing attorney for nearly twenty years (all of which has been focused in estate planning) and prior to attending law school practiced for two years in the tax department of a major public accounting firm.
What makes his background unique?
In addition to his legal and financial background, Richard has over seventeen years of graduate level teaching experience. He has taught in the CFP® Certificate Programs at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Georgetown University and Fordham University. He has also lectured for both the Financial Planning Association of New Jersey and the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education.
What would he like to share with students?
Richard has designed a unique course that is based on both in-class lecture and problem sets. Under this format, students are introduced to new concepts in a class lecture format and given the immediate opportunity to apply this newly acquired knowledge to real world fact pattern problems drawn directly from Richard’s practice and his interaction with practicing financial professionals. In this manner a student is given the unique opportunity to not just learn estate planning concepts and techniques but also to immediately apply this knowledge and learn how it relates to other areas of the financial planning process.
